Dr. John R. Dubois
In 1965, Dr. John Dubois was recruited to London to become the
Founding Executive Director of Madame Vanier Children's Services.
Under his leadership, Vanier became the first licensed incorporated
children's treatment centre in the province in 1968.
In 1972, when the centre moved from Fontbonne Hall on Queen's
Avenue to its present site on Trafalgar Street, he was responsible
for developing a comprehensive range of residential, day treatment
and outpatient assessment and treatment services which have been
recognized as being second to none in the province.
Dr. Dubois played a leadership role in the development of
children's mental health services in Ontario. In 1996, he received
an award from the Ontario Association of Children's Mental Health
Centres recognizing his lifetime contribution to the field of
children's mental health. In the same year, The University of
Western Ontario installed Dr. Dubois as Professor Emeritus of the
Faculty of Medicine.
Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to
medical education and to training of other professionals. He has
taught at Fanshawe College and is a member of the Departments of
Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Occupational Therapy at the University
of Western Ontario, where he served a term as the Acting Head of
the Division of Child Psychiatry.
Dr. John Dubois retired from Vanier after 31 years of dedicated
service. He has continued in private practice since that time. He
received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical
School and psychiatric training at the University of Colorado.
After a stint in the U.S. Air Force during which he was stationed
in Japan, he finished his training and practiced Psychiatry in
Detroit, Michigan before coming to Canada.
Dr. Dubois' interests range from parenting and child discipline,
the organization of services for troubled children and youth,
consulting to under serviced areas, attention deficit hyperactive
disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, medical education and
psychopharmacology.
Dr. Dubois' distinguished career, much of it centered on Vanier,
is being celebrated with the Roots and Wings Award. Dr. Dubois
provided a strong and healthy root system to children's mental
health services.
