Community Group Program for Children Exposed to Woman Abuse

The Community Group Program for Children Exposed to Woman Abuse is a 12-week program for children who have been exposed to and affected by woman abuse and violence in their family.

Children's groups run at the same time as Mom's groups. If a mother/guardian is unable to attend, their child will still be allowed to participate in the children's group. Attendance by mothers/guardians is strongly encouraged as they play pivotal roles in their children's healing process.

How it works

Children's Group
This group provides children with the opportunity to process and understand the violence and abuse they have experienced.

Group guidelines and trained Vanier facilitators help create a safe, secure and predictable environment for children/youth to share their experiences.

The children's group is offered throughout the school year during the day and after school in London and Middlesex. Transportation to and from the group is available to participants.

Mother's Group
This group provides mothers with an opportunity to explore the impact of abuse and violence on their children and how they can best support their children's healing.

Groups for mothers are offered during the day and evening to accommodate work schedules. Transportation to and from group and childcare funding is available to participants.

Who is eligible?

The group program is available to Vanier families who are actively engaged in services at Vanier and who have experienced woman abuse.

BET (Behaviours, Emotions, Thoughts)

BET is for youth age 12 to 18 who have concurrent disorders  such as ADHD, anxiety, mood disorders associated with problematic substance use/abuse.

BET is provided in London-Middlesex, Elgin and Oxford counties.

How it works

BET is a 12-week group program that delivers psycho-education, psychotherapeutic and supportive elements while using the principles of best practice (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and empirically supported treatments.

The program has four components:

  1. Referral, Screening and Assessment
  2. Psychological Consultation
  3. Group Intervention
  4. Community Outreach and Education

Upon completion of the group program there will be an evaluation which will include participant feedback (goals met, satisfaction), participant attendance rates and standardized post-intervention measures (where possible).

As a possible candidate for the program the youth may be asked if they are:

  • experiencing trouble at home, school or community due to your substance abuse
  • finding it difficult to  make good choices when faced with stress, anger or confusion
  • experiencing difficulty "balancing"  your emotions  i.e., anger, fear and sadness
  • confused because some situations just don't make sense to you or you feel others don't understand you
  • ever concerned that your decisions may result in personal harm or harm towards others
  • critical or your abilities
  • experiencing difficulty with "change"  I.e., home, friends, school, relationships etc., which may be having a negative affect on your life or someone else's
  • finding it difficult to attend pleasurable activities beyond your substance use activities

If the answer is "yes" to one or more questions they may want to consider BET.
